At The Avenue Dental Centre in Windsor, our dentists and team provide dental care and treatment options tailored to the unique needs of children.
Early Oral Health
We recommend you bring your children to the dentist around age 3 unless you have any prior concerns. Every patient is different, but overall, we suggest that your child have a professional check-up and cleaning every six months.
Services for Children
Visiting the dentist on a regular basis when your child is young will help preserve the baby teeth until they are ready to fall out and be replaced by the adult teeth. At the Avenue Dental Centre, we offer the following services for children.
- Cleanings & Exams
Our hygiene and prevention services, including regular cleanings and exams will help your child prevent cavities.
During each appointment, the dentist or hygienist will also review proper oral hygiene techniques with your child to ensure that each tooth is getting a proper cleaning at home.
- Dental Fillings
Despite best efforts to ensure good dental hygiene, sometimes kids end up with cavities. At every appointment your child attends, the dentist will monitor their growing smile for any sign of developing cavities.
Cavity care for children is very similar to cavity care for adults, because preserving tooth health is the most important aspect. If your child has a cavity, your dentist will use a dental filling to repair it and preserve your child’s oral health.
- Dental Sealants
Dental sealants are tooth-coloured materials that are applied to the permanent molars and the chewing surfaces of other teeth in order to prevent cavities in children.
Dental sealants are applied to the chewing surface of the teeth. They bond to the grooves of the teeth, sealing problem areas for decay and acting as a protective shield for the tooth enamel.
- Orthodontics
At every appointment your child attends, the dentist will also monitor their growing smile for any sign of developing misalignments. If a problem is caught early enough, early orthodontic intervention can prevent it from getting worse.
We offer two-phase orthodontic treatment for children. As a result, more invasive orthodontic treatment when your child is older may not be required.
Oral Appliances for Children
Our Windsor dentists also provide custom-fitted oral appliances for children. These appliances can help improve and protect the oral health of our young patients so they can maintain a healthy smile for years to come.
- Space Maintainers
Sometimes a baby tooth is lost before an adult tooth is ready to grow in. A space maintainer holds the space open, acting as a guide for when the adult tooth begins to erupt.
Without a space maintainer, the adult tooth may drift and erupt in a bad position in the mouth.
A space maintainer can be made of plastic or stainless steel. Some space maintainers are fixed to the surrounding natural teeth and some are removable.
- Mouth Guards
We offer custom mouth guards that are fitted exactly to your child’s mouth to provide optimal protection and comfort.
If your child plays sports, wearing a mouth guard will provide protection for their teeth and mouth, minimizing potential risks and damage associated with physical interactions, falls, or accidents.
- Thumb Sucking Guards
Thumb sucking in babies and young children is a normal, self-soothing behaviour. Most children will outgrow this habit during the preschool years. However, thumb sucking that persists after the eruption of the adult teeth can lead to serious dental and speech problems.
Your child's thumb sucking habit can be stopped with the use of a soft, plastic guard that your dentist places behind your child's front teeth to discourage the behaviour.
